Cardiovascular diseases, particularly ischemic heart disease, are the leading cause of death in the Czech Republic. Approximately 30,000 people die annually from ischemic heart disease, with over 20% of them being younger than 65 years old. Ischemic heart disease is caused by the deposition of cholesterol, calcium, and other substances on the inner wall of the coronary arteries of the heart. This narrowing of the artery prevents normal blood flow, leading to impaired nutrition and oxygenation of the heart muscle. This condition is sometimes accompanied by so-called angina pectoris – chest pain beneath the breastbone. Complete blockage of a coronary vessel results in an acute myocardial infarction; if timely treatment is not initiated, it leads to cardiac arrest.
The field of cardiology includes concultations focused on heart rhythm disorders, ischemic heart disease, heart defects, and pacemaker monitoring.
